Weighing In On “The Voice” Top 12 Performances

The Voice Top 12 results telecast will kick off later tonight at 9|8c on NBC and it has us all wondering what will be the outcome! Last night was one of the best nights as far as performances go all season.

First to take the stage of the evening was 15-year-old powerhouse, Braiden Sunshine from Team Gwen performing Styx’s “Renegade.” The song itself demands a strong attitude, one that I’m not sure Braiden has in him…yet. Next up was the first of all the coaches “saves” from last week, Amy Vachal from Team Adam performing Drake’s “Hotline Bling.” The performance proves to be one of Amy’s most interesting so far in the competition. She brings out an eerie edge that is lacking in the original, and she looks powerful doing it on stage.

Mark Hood, from Team Pharrell sang “Against All Odds” by Phil Collins. Mark said “it’s time to show a different side of himself.” Following Mark was Team Blake’s Emily Ann Roberts performing a little less sassy, “Blame It on Your Heart” by Patty Loveless. It is clearly a good song choice for her this week after last week’s slowed-down hymn. Next ups is Korin Bukowski from Team Gwen. Korin is sporting more than a new song, she’s got a whole new look! Korin sings “Titanium” by David Guetta, featuring Sia. The performance shows us a whole different side to this singer…and it helps us understand why it was that her coach saved her last week.

Next up is Barrett Baber from Team Blake. He is no doubt the most consistent country artist in the competition thus far. Barrett goes on to perform his “smallest” song of the competition, “Right Here Waiting” by Richard Marx. Although Barrett is just standing there singing into the microphone, he still commands the audiences attention. He is proceeded by Team Pharrell’s Madi Davis. Davis sings a reggae-version of Jewel’s  “Who Will Save Your Soul.” It may have seemed like and unlikely choice for her but in the end made perfect sense.

Followed by Jeffery Austin from Team Gwen. He took on “Let It Go” by James Bay, and it was intriguing to say the least. Known as a folk-rock singer the song choice was out of Jeffery’s genre but he proved he can cross over to any style of music. Team Adam’s powerhouse, Shelby Brown was next up belting out Jamey Johnson’s “In Color.” Shelby puts her signature roar into full effect! I will be shocked if Shelby goes home tonight…Evan McKeel, Team Pharrell’s last singer of the episode is up next. Evan desperately proving to show he is not losing his steam as the season progresses, performing “This Is It” by Kenny Loggins.

Second to last singer of the evening is Team Adam’s Jordan Smith and no doubt the BEST performance of the night. Smith, who sings regularly on Sunday mornings at his church in Kentucky, sang the Christian hymn, “Great Is Thy Faithfulness.” The hymn references Lamentations 3:22-23 and making minor adjustments, he still made it all his own. Jordan’s version is currently sitting at #1 on the iTunes chart.

The last performance of the evening came from Team Blake’s Zach Seabaugh. Performing a song his coach says the younger generation has never heard before, “My Love” by Little Texas. A little less exciting than his performance last week, he was still able to engage the crowd and deliver a great performance.

Two contestants from each coaches’ teams appear to be the most vulnerable, based on their ranking on the iTunes Top 200 singles chart at the close of voting. Team Adam and Team Blake account for five of the top six positions among the Season 9 finalists.
