Clearly, a lot of Gloriana fans have pretty large text message phone plans.
The harmony-heavy quartet won the T-Mobile Breakthrough Artist Award at last night’s American Music Awards and beat pop juggernauts Kid CuDi and Lady Gaga for the award.
The award, whose winner was determined by the number of text message votes the artist received, came as such a shock to the band that during their acceptance speech, the audience was asked to raise their hands if they had never heard of Gloriana before tonight. About half the audience did raise their hands.
Whitney Houston and Michael Jackson may have been the celebrated stars of the evening, but in terms of sheer award numbers, this was Taylor Swift’s night. All Kanye jokes aside, the country-pop starlet cleaned up, taking home awards for Favorite Female Country Artist, Favorite Female Pop Artist and Artist of the Year.
Other country-related category results were fairly predictable: Keith Urban took home the award for Favorite Male Country Artist and Rascal Flatts took home the award for Favorite Country Group over Sugarland and the Zac Brown Band.
CMP wants to know:
What were your thoughts on the AMAs? Anyone you wanted to see more of? Anyone you think got robbed? Anyone you want to congratulate? Do you think all of Taylor Swift’s awards were merited or is her recent award-show success a lot of post-Kanye-incident hype? What’s next for Gloriana?
Oh yeah –– half the audience may not have known who Gloriana is, but they did get a pre-show endorsement from Lady Gaga:
