Merle Haggard and Buck Owens are credited with creating the Bakersfield sound, a genre characterized by minimal lyrics and doused with heavy doses of steel guitar and Telecasters.  Decades later the sound, and Buck Owens, would be immortalized in Dwight Yoakam’s homage, “Streets of Bakersfield.”

Throughout his celebrated career Merle earned nearly 50 number 1 hits, and scored dozens of Top 10 tunes. He toured and made music for almost 50 years after the release of his first album, and he became a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1994.

Merle was born April 6, 1937 and he died in 2016 on his birthday. Merle aficionados, and country music fans of all genres, won’t want to miss this opportunity to learn more about the legend who helped shape country music and continues to influence today’s artists.
