Sugarland "Love On The Inside" Mercury Records

by Lisa Kiser

So I thought it’d be a sweet idea to check out Sugarland in depth, so I consulted the unofficial captain of their lower Michigan fan base (who also conveniently doubles as my best friend Steve) to borrow the CD and give y’all the scoop. I must say, although I’ve already promised to return said CD, “All I Want to Do” is listen to it! Admittedly, I’ve been indifferent to Sugarland in the past but I’ve grown a new appreciation for their work in this new album. I personally was privileged to check out the Deluxe Fan Edition which magically includes the amazing compilation of Sugarland, Little Big Town, and Jake Owen, “Life in a Northern Town.”

I was pleasantly surprised at this, the third album from the group and am left wondering how I missed out on the first two albums. To be honest, the dangled carrot that led me to take the bait was not the summery “All I Want to Do,” but rather it was “Already Gone.” The former has enjoyed a nice run on the radio and video outlets and is a super airy, fun song in its own right, but personally, I was just feeling “Already Gone” more. After playing this song a few hundred times, I decided to check out the rest of the album, which features some pretty cool tunes.

Leading lady Jennifer Nettles really rocks it out in such tunes as “It Happens” a hilarious tale of life’s “are you serious right now” moments, as well as “Operation: Working Vacation” which is pretty self-explanatory. She has the ability to turn it around and get emotional with such tunes as “Joey” and “What I’d Give” and does it convincingly and well. My personal favorite would have to be “We Run” a more urgent and pulsing love song about leaving sense at the door and following your heart to reckless freedom. Take if from an impartial party – this is a sweet album and I give it my highest recommendation.
