Yim Yames salutes Harrison, saves America

My Morning Jacket frontman Jim James is a busy, busy dude.

His first in a slew of mostly altruistic musical projects under the name “Yim Yames” is Tribute To…, an EP homage to former Beatle George Harrison, featuring acoustic covers of his songs. The EP will benefit the Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary, a shelter for livestock rescued from maltreatment at factory farms.

The EP includes Harrison both classics like “My Sweet Lord” and “All Things Must Pass” and more obscure gems like “Sir Frankie Crisp (Let It Roll),” but the highlight is an exquisite, atmospheric reworking of “Long, Long, Long,” one of The Beatles’

The EP will be released in stores on August 4th, but is available for digital download and pre-order (CD and vinyl) now on yimyames.com. The vinyl package comes with a Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary t-shirt and a porton of the proceeds will go to benefit the sanctuary.

In addition to promoting the EP, James Yames recently appeared on a benefit album with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, is producing an album by Ben Sollee and Daniel Martin Moore to benefit Appalachian Voices and is working on the Monsters of Folk project with M. Ward, Conor Oberst and others. He is also re-drafting the Constitution and has heat vision (okay, maybe not).

For now, check out the EP stream from his website and be sure to listen to “Long, Long, Long” a few times:
