I have been sitting here in pensive reverie pondering every angle from which to take the news of Eric’s new radio show, Outsider’s Radio Show, on SiriusXM’s The Highway channel.
I could go with the idea that he is experiencing another blowing up of sorts. 2011’s Chief, despite being his third studio release, saw Church explode into country radio success with a fervor of rockstardom. Last year’s The Outsiders, though taking off to a slow start, finished the year with much acclaim garnering multiple nominations and awards by all the top critics.
So, by that rationale this is just a further expansion of the Eric Church empire. Off the heels of such success why not spread into as many markets and facets of music as possible? But of course there is always a converse point of view.
We have gotten to the point in the music business where an artist can not make a living as just an artist anymore. Well, let me rephrase “make a living” to “can’t get rich”. I for one do not see why our entertainers need to be ascended to such lofty social statuses. When did living comfortably become not enough? Artist greed is not to blame, but the cleptocracy of big record labels.
My personal opinion notwithstanding, is this a passion project? Perhaps this is something Eric has always wanted to do. Or maybe the demand for content is such has the fans need this. Eric has shown himself to be an innovator in country music, this is probably just an original way for him to release behind the scenes or new material. Wait, I got it, Eric Church is a genius! One of the biggest issues plaguing artists is getting music to radio due to the stations being in the pockets of the giant label conglomerates. So what if the artist WAS the radio?! Whoa…mind blown.
All of those thoughts came careening across my countenance before it dawned on me which one I was missing. The only angle that really matters. How freaking awesome it is that Eric Church has his own radio show!
The show airs the final Friday of each month at 10pm with rebroadcasts on Monday and Wednesday on The Highway as well as the SiriusXM app and website. The show will feature influences along with current favorites of Eric’s and also exclusive tunes from his archives. How badass is that?
