Eric Church Awarded “Album of the Year” for CHIEF at the 2012 CMA Awards

“And the Award for CMA Album of the Year goes to … Eric Church / CHIEF”!

It was a breath-holding announcement met with an uproar of applause that took a moment to settle.

Eric Church’s platinum-selling, #1 debuting, third album CHIEF took top honors at the 46th annual CMA Awards (Nov 1). Both the Chief and CHIEF were up against the outstanding work of artists Miranda Lambert (Four The Record), Dierks Bentley (Home), Luke Bryan (tailgates & tanlines) and Lady Antebellum (Own The Night).

Eric took the stage, the honor, the moment and with his rugged yet humble persona thanked his wife Katherine and son, Boone McCoy, first then continued:

“I’ve been doing this a long time. I spent a lot of my career, wondering where I fit in … I was too country, too rock. I want to thank you guys for giving me somewhere to hang my hat tonight. I appreciate it. Thank you.”

“Album of the Year is Eric Church’s first-ever CMA award win and I am not at all surprised by the CMA’s addition to the litany of accolades the Chief has strummed up. I had the honor of chatting with Eric shortly after the release of CHIEF stumped Billboard with its #1 debut across all genres. The GRAMMY nominated and ACM nominated Album of the Year produced Eric’s first #1 hit Drink In My Hand followed by the album’s third release and second #1 hit Springsteen.

Eric’s first headlining tour complementing CHIEF tipped its flask back on January 19, 2012. And after a string of venue sell outs, the Choir demanded a second run. The second leg of Eric Church’s “Blood Sweat & Beers” Tour began on September 13, 2012 at UMass Amherst, MA and will wrap up on December 15th at the Bank Atlantic Center in Sunrise, FL.

But apparently it takes more than a CMA Album of the Year to inspire the Chief to get back in the studio and begin cutting the chords for album four. But what WILL take Eric Church back in the studio is his usual, time and integrity – that’s just how the man works – and the Choir wouldn’t have it any other way.

“I’m going to wait longer,” Church states. “There’s a lot of reasons to make records. But the one thing I won’t do is make a record for an economic reason, because I need to promote a tour or my label needs to hit a number. The next record will come when it’s creatively the right time. In doing that, that’s how this record (CHIEF) happened.”
