Luke Bryan announced today that Kill The Lights, the CMA and ACM Entertainer of the Year’s fourth full length studio album, will be released August 7.
The premier single, “Kick the Dust Up”, is available on iTunes as of today(5/19). Nashville FM radio host Bobby Bones debuted the track on the morning show. It is without a doubt everything one has come to expect from a Luke Bryan song. Take that as you will.
I really enjoyed the music to the song. Luke has always been amenable to trying new things with tracks albeit with a propensity for “pop”. The melody seems a bit like it istrying too hard tbough. Dramatic melodic undulation can be essential in keeping a listener’s attention, but it must still fit within the boundaries of the song. The lyrics leave something to be desired, like a mute button for example. I expected better from Luke, but there is a chance, as has been the case in the past, that this is just the “bubble gum” radio track and the album will have some cogent material.
At the end of the day we are still talking about one of country music’s modern icons and I am sure “Kick the Dust Up” will be at #1 in two shakes of a lamb’s tail. It is a fun summer song that I will inevitably be rocking my head to in my truck at some point.
