I first got a taste of Little Bit of Everything traversing the width of Michigan on a dreary November afternoon. I must say that Mr. Currington’s upbeat country rhythm did indeed shine a ray of sunshine into the pickup. Despite my affinity for his radio darlings (“Why, Why, Why,” “Must Be Doin’ Something Right,” “I Got a Feelin’”, etc.) I am not an avid follower of Currington, but decided to give his album a shot anyway.

For whatever reason, this was a difficult album for me to figure out. It sounds good—his voice is strong and true, with a clear country tone. The lyrics also hold substance, important for the writer (and dreamer) in me. I found myself swept away in “Life and Love and the Meaning Of” as well as “No One Has Eyes Like You” and my personal lyrical favorite, “People Are Crazy.” Now that’s just the good honest truth right there! Though I did enjoy the album, I can’t help but feel it lacks something. I think that, at the risk of gaining some enemies, I just wasn’t feeling it. An album that really gets to me, that knocks me off my feet and sucks me in, is one that I get antsy being away from. Whether it be from its singable, relatable lyrics, or sheer heartfelt power, my go-to pieces carry in them an almost magnetic force that keeps me forever in their fields, and unfortunately I didn’t get that from this album.

That’s not to say that Currington isn’t talented, that the songs weren’t well written or well produced. I’ll repeat that I did enjoy it very much. I’m sure his fans will be well pleased, as he seems to have stayed true to his roots while still putting out a fresh and interesting mix of songs. “Little Bit of Everything” just didn’t strike a chord with me. Overall, it’s a good album to have in the collection, and I’d definitely encourage others to chime in with their opinions.
